Chicago is a world class city, filled with a plethora of activities! From museums and Michelin starred restaurants to nature preserves and theater, you can find any niche activity your heart desires. Below are a list of a sampling of activities in Hyde Park and in the wider Chicago area, coupled with links to other articles with ideas.

 

Hyde Park:

  • Museum of Science and Industry (MSI)
    • Located a 15 minute walk from campus, this museum hosts the original Apollo 8 module and Aurora 7 capsule, and a wide variety of permanent and rotating exhibits. This is a very family friendly museum.
  • Du Sable Black History Museum
    • Also a 15 minute walk from campus, this is the United States' oldest independent African American museum. Learn about the 1919 Chicago race riot, civil rights, or stories about Black history in this country.
  • Garden of the Phoenix (Japanese Gardens)
    • Located behind MSI is a stunningly serene Japanese garden, built by the Japanese Government for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.
  • Jackson Park
    • This park is where MSI is located and features trails, a new disc golf course, and plenty of green space for picnics.
  • Promontory Point

  • Museums:
    • Art Institute (fine art - including Van Gogh, Monet, Warhol, O'Keefe, and many more; some of the most well known works of art in the world reside here permanently)
    • Field Museum (natural history - extraordinary exhibits on Ancient Americas, paleontology, and geology)
  • Millennium Park
    • Home to Buckingham Fountain and a variety of magnificent statues that extend northwards next to the lakefront.
  • Navy Pier
    • If you enjoy fine dining, ferris wheels, and fun, you have to check out Navy Pier. Chicago also has fireworks every Wednesday at 9pm at Navy Pier.
